Mineral Economics and Strategy Unit (“MESU”)

Applications are invited from interested and suitably qualified persons
for appointment to the position of:

GIS Technician

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Assist in the execution of research work by providing a support service
including the production of specialised maps and map services.

PERFORMANCE AREAS:

Ensure the completion of tasks on brief, on budget and on time, subject
only to time delays approved by the client or by unit management.
Perform assigned support work, in a cost-effective manner, to meet
pre-set standards.
Learn and participate in collaborative team work and acquire mentored
on-the-job training.
Record and report results accurately so that information is available
for utilisation and later reference.
Assist in research that has a spatial component and collect appropriate
spatial data with which to build maps supporting research being carried
out in the unit.
Assist in developing the Mintek SDI (spatial data infrastructure) and
comply with appropriate SDI standards and methodologies
Perform spatial analysis and produce maps to support ongoing research as
well as ad-hoc requests.

JOB KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS REQUIRED

Honours or equivalent degree in Geology with Geo-informatics, GIS, or
Geography. Majors in information technology, computer science, remote
sensing, applied maths, geology, economics or related fields are further
recommendations.
Minimum 18 months GIS work experience
Proven spatial analysis and cartographic skills. Ability and experience
with ArcGIS, Linux and Open Source GIS tools, including coding, are
further recommendations.

THE FOLLOWING WOULD ALSO BE ADVANTAGEOUS

Professional registration under PLATO as a GISc Technician

Salary Range: ~ R218 000   CTC
